July is in the midst of summer, and the sunshine, sea waves, and breeze make it the perfect time to plan beach activities. However, our originally good mood can be ruined by the piles of plastic garbage we may encounter along the way. Scientists estimate that over 8 million tons of plastic waste enter the oceans every year. Plastic is difficult to degrade naturally, and it can take up to hundreds of years for a plastic bag to decompose, during which it breaks down into microplastics. This not only harms marine life but also affects us as it re-enters the human body through the food chain.
In response to July's 'International Plastic Bag-Free Day', Green in Tuen Mun has prepared a two-day carnival, the 'Plastic-Free Blue Celebration to Protect the Sea', to deepen your understanding of the ocean, raise awareness of the severity of plastic pollution, and encourage everyone to start with small habits in daily life to reduce pressure on the oceans and waste in the future. Remember to bring the three plastic-free essentials when going out: a shopping bag, a water bottle, and tableware, to practice waste reduction at the source.
The carnival offers a rich variety of activities, including the #FreeSecondhandMarket and #CowSearch, as well as the ever-popular #EnvironmentalWorkshop where instructors teach you how to upcycle everyday items! There will also be booth games to test your knowledge of marine conservation, with fabulous prizes to be won! Moreover, don't miss the Plastic-Free Ocean Art Exhibition, which raises awareness of the harmful effects of marine plastic pollution and inspires the public's determination and motivation to protect the oceans.
"Protect the blue sea, starting with a plastic-free commitment!"
